When you want to type a kanji, you have to type its reading, and then use space to convert it. Due to Japanese's… japanesesiness, there are multiple conversion candidates for the kana you entered. Let's try a word you probably just learned, like 言う. To type that in kanji you have to switch to kana input mode (the あ symbol) and type いう, then press space until 言う is selected, and then pressΒ Enter.
