## Thoughts > - Sousou no Frieren is a series that has the power to change how you choose to live your life: to reflect now on what you may live to someday regret and choose how you will take action to cherish it in the moment while you still live it. Great fiction is fiction that is a reflection of real life. It provides a medium through which parts of reality can be analyzed. - [Source](https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=507559) - Undoing the effects of social media's escapism and transactional socializing by giving a space to feel emotion - Overcoming existential entrapment - Gives you more grappling points as someone who may not have the experiences to make those participatory knowing connections - Frieren focuses on philos and agape, while Violet Evergarden focuses on eros, romantic love - Each anime has a very important theme ### Reading Reviews - The main story is focused on these flashbacks. It encourages you to reflect on your memories. ### Per Episodes #### EP1 - sad and relatable, sharing an experience together and seeing them die #### EP2 - It's not worth dying yet if you haven't put other people's experiences and insights and service into effect - Heiter uses Himmel as a role model to live his remaining life because he feels like his own is not worth it - Frieren constantly being asked why so passionate about magic #### EP3 - Deciding to watch in 1x - Why was she following her and is more stingy? - Wait wtf she's this old already - Time is skipping so fast? - Not knowing about people because you didn't get to spend the time to do so - Human evolution - Why the emphasis on history? - Always incorporating a bit of aging - I think watching in 1x better fits the intent of the anime, might continue #### EP4 - Wandering - Trying to view sunrise since she didn't do it when in her past party - still doesn't find it beautiful - not about the destination but the friends we made along the way LOL - appreciate the people who helped you, not the objective itself - She's too indifferent, which prevents her from enjoying life and the people around her? - What the fuck she knew who flamme was ??? And she didn't even decide to go here or tell people? - Heaven is a physical place in their world? - Similar mindset as me, no point in spending time if you're just going to end up growing apart and it won't be a long-term thing - So as she refollows this path, she begins to remember and reflect on the journey? - Time is just such a constant consideration, but it does make sense #### EP5 - WTF is this anime 😭 - this guy is just a fraud out of courage alkdaslkd - holy fk thats some explosive power - what does this mean ? someone who is cowardly despite being mentored and having powerful skills ? - Watching in 1x has been pretty chill #### EP6 - When you have the skills, all you need is resolve - Of course they were just testing him lol - anger due to not exceeding? - the humanity of the heros journey, to make it ridiculous and fun rather than painful - Form of repayment to a mentor is to share your own stories to continue the life #### EP7 - Holidays and celebrations for remembering - making statues so you won't be alone in the future damn - doesn't even want to acnkowledge the fact she is the elf from the party, interesting - only 28 years interesting - the generosity you have with your time when you have a lot of it - Demons have a completely different sense of reason - No morality, purely selfish, words are just to deceive - I like how we can see through the deception thanks to the backstory - Leveraging connection and family - yeah their goal is to deceive to infiltrate lul - I had to watch another to see this fight asdlkjasdlkjas #### EP8 - This is giving eminence / overlord vibes lol - The courage of him to go straight on because of a lack of respect - I mean i should have known frieren was actually a monster, the eyes are just menacing now #### EP9 - Interesting item, scale based on mana - animation so fire - so cool to see how fern has her own advantage - Interesting how Stark is losing his fight - It's a 1v1 on who's technique is better, a copycat or the student holy fuck - winning because of courage and persistence rather than skill - so cool to see both of them pop off with no fighting experience prior aaa - just curious on how frierens goes - actually teared up #### EP10 - Upon frieren meeting Flamme she was still empty inside - the pain of being a powerful mage helps you oversee other people's egos? - Similar to [[Classroom of the elite Season 3]], him consciously concealing his strength to not be overestimated - If you're bound by something (status, wealth, magic), you can't control it - Parallels surface level perceptions of people? the demon is so obsessed with mana amounts? - "why would you do something so pointless" as it is the deciding factor lmaooo - The parallel in deception tactics holy fuck - obviously expected but with the power of storytelling you still feel an insane amount of awe #### EP11 i don't even know what to say about this episode. Just continuing to take it slow throughout the journey in slice of life fashion. religion?? wanting to believe in a god so you feel worthy for your efforts when no one else would remember goddess instead of traditional god parallel of being praising someone who is an atheist, does that tap into [[Agape]]? My desire to learn japanese is correlated with how much im enjoying the anime im watching hmm still always tempted to fast-forward but i am much more conscious now #### EP12 - I wonder if there is a deeper meaning for the flashbacks - nvm, so the lie was made up by other people to confirm their beliefs? - Damn i thought stark was gonna pull it but i wonder what those flashbacks were - lmaoo that death stare - wonder if there will be some correlation between himmel's role modelling and his new life as an externally obligated warrior? - was not expecting that parallel but i guess it should have made sense throughout all episodes? - working hard then validated all his previous hamburg steaks #### EP13 - Kids dreaming of becomign an adventurer - Is frieren pathless path as well? - NO WAY THEY GET ANOTHER PERSON ONBOARD??? - Crazy how conscientious Fern is - The constant rejection of someone inviting you for more, due to a lack of self-confidence - It's not just the effects of the trip, but the effects of the party throughout the entire time after as well #### EP14 - He's used to fern being harsh LOL - what is this social obligation from heiter to fake it - LMAOOOO Sien's just adding fuel to a fire - LMAOOO himmel knew the significance of it alskdjasldkj - WHAT?????? #### EP15 - No way they add another party member so fast? - No way everyone is falling asleep wtf??? - That's pretty cool, the flashbacks are actually meaningful - WTF is this side quest???? why is he so droopy lmaoooo - what are these stares supposed to mean, i'm getting goosebumps - this scene is beautiful - I just like the constant parallels to people's stories #### EP16 - why keep a memory secret? - Memories to help you persevere - This series just keeps giving such unexpected goosebumps - Promises, clinging on to a last strand of hope - Man's actually got dementia sldkjalkdjasld - Being remembered - I thought he was going to know he died #### EP17 - Wait who tf are half of these new people??? - Constant mini conflicts between the two, due to a lack of communication? - Being pulled out of your inner world to learn to be with others - Such a sudden farewell? - Cool how every village is so accomodating - just a very cozy touch #### EP18 - This person has to be evil no??? - Damn really only Fern can take i t??? - Have everyone present at that time, that's gotta foreshadow to someone dying no? - wtf is this dynamic between the two - always having someone to help you push yourself #### EP19 - Got that anime sophistication coming in clutch - Cool to see some interpersonal conflict - Is using basic magic restricting her? #### EP20 - FERN KILLING??? - LMAOOO this mid-banter, holding their lives so loosely - damn there's a fire cast, reminds me of HxH trials - holy fuck fern has been cooking - Two face-offs? - I'm curious where this season ends then #### EP21 - More lore to frieren's upbringing? - The journey over destination? - wait thats fucking crazy, she's this cracked??? - WTF LMAOOOO a fist fight for the last one alkjalkdjasdas #### EP22 - damn fern will never catch a break to be anal - copycat magic without actually knowing, wonder if that can be tied to knowing? - Being remembered for your cooking flavors, interesting how it alwayas lowkey pops up - To live is to help people, and to do so is to subtly change their lives - Why is this exam so hard? #### EP23 - Himmel enjoying the journey through exploring dungeons, choosing a meaningful adventure - Existential confusion for fern after achieving her promise - Frieren provides meaning to Fern's mage journey because of her innate curiosity and joy? - Having to fight yourself? - WHY IS THE LAST OBSTACLE FRIEREN???? - wait just her unphased descent just felt so awe-striking #### EP24 - Magic is animation, is this supposed to be taken metaphorically too? - FERN?? #### EP25 - innocent dream is what flamme symbolized - so mortality causes us to rush decisions unlike four thousand weeks - humans having such short lives but being able to do such amazing and inspirational feats - Magic can't create anything the caster can't visualize perfectly - You have to be delusional? to have your own irrational vision? #### EP26 - wtf frieren still has even more tricks up her sleeve - what is that? just pure mana aura manipulation? - Surely they show final test too right? #### EP27 - aww wholesome frieren - like how they keep including the meaninglessness of the mana concealing - beauty is in the useless, that is how the unexpected, the magic happens? just like how casually teaching flamme, which led to frieren learning, then the flower spell being the returning reason for himmel? - interesting how the final passing was that subtle #### EP28 - ???????? WAIT THIS GUY IS A CRACKED GENIUS WTF?? please tell me he shows up somewhere else as well - Cool to hear everyone's inspirations from the hero's party - Amplifies how even the smallest stories were those that were remembered - Death isn't the only goodbye - Stark is the reincarnation of Himmel? - No tearful goodbyes because it would be embarrasing to meet again [[Frieren Manga]] ### Rating ### Personal Significance i feel empty when i see frieren on my feeds 🥲 - I literally just binged all my remaining episodes from episode 12 to finish in one day lakjdalkdjasljk - I like the lack of tension, it is just a chill slice of life but I found the mage arc to be very entertaining - Persistent themes throughout the entire story, was nothing flashy, just tranquil ### Themes - Regret - Impermanence of human life - Being remembered beyond your death - Constant flashbacks to the dead characters in the party and seeing their influence - Enjoying the journey and remembering the journey beyond it's finish - importance of the journey - Change of frieren from not caring to retracing and starting a new journey with a bit more mindfulness - Stark wanting to repay the stories told - It is deeply human, a suggestion to be kind and mindful - Constantly being broke as a part of this lifestyle, I wonder if that's intended or for comedy - 2024-04-18 there's no way once they reach the destination, that they will pull the cliche that the real value was the rememberance of memories along the way - Inspired from 107 when revisiting scripture gave it #### Reddit - Moving forward for the sake of growth and reflection https://www.reddit.com/r/Frieren/comments/1bl1d05/comment/kw22ndw/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button If I could summarize Frieren: Beyond Journey's End in the simplest way, it would have to be by a verse from the Gospel of John in the Bible: **So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy (John 16:22)**. This is exactly the theme and the message Frieren conveys to the audience with its brilliant storytelling. This series is dedicated to those who wish to seek comfort when they are in dark times or when they are bereaved, that they will deserve happiness and belonging more than ever. In my whole life, I have never experienced witnessing an anime so superbly crafted that it would really uplift one's soul. I am grateful beyond words. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End isn't just about a story of remembering and honoring the memory of someone so dear to you who has passed away, it's a story about the importance of cherishing those who make you feel loved and validated, it's a story that reminds us that time only moves forward and we have to value our time to keep our friends and family close, and time flies when you are not having fun. The core atmosphere of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is mourning and melancholy, but in the midst of grief, we can have personal growth, because people who are grieving need to find new ways of being and engaging with the world. A new adventure for Frieren while treasuring the memories and using what she learned from her previous journey with Himmel, Eisen and Heiter is what help made her grow and learn because remembering the past is important. This is absolutely a series we can apply in our lives, this series indeed gave me joy and comfort, it was a breath of fresh air. One thing that makes Frieren so unique is that brings the audience together regardless of their background or preferences, it made them realize they had an anime they needed to look forward to enjoying and being fascinated. I have nothing but praise for this series, this is really the product of such brilliant creative minds, and it's hard to find something about this series worth criticizing. You just can't hate on this, it's truly one of a kind. This is what you call a masterfully executed fantasy adventure series that even its slice of life, drama and action chapters were flawlessly handled. The animation, visuals, soundtrack, writing, direction, voice acting (both the original Japanese and English dub), the world building and how magic and spells are showcased are worthy of unending positive reception and applause. I could not thank Madhouse enough for adapting this magnum opus, and I am grateful to the author of the manga, the cast and crew of the anime, and the entire Frieren community for the enthusiastic support. I am proud to be part of this community and I am proud of what we all have achieved. Now, we must look forward to a continuation of the anime and we should encourage others to read the manga. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is always going to be remembered and celebrated as one of the greatest anime and manga of all time. God bless us all. ### Memorable Scenes ### What I enjoyed - [Ubeland](https://www.reddit.com/r/Frieren/comments/1c5sv5l/comment/kzwszyd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) - Glad I am not the only person that really enjoyed land's character ### What I disliked ### Similar ## Notes - Iyashikei genre, soothing/healing effect on viewer - Apparently director was very passionate about this anime, built a team just to best serve it
