But, as useful as this new feature is, there's still a lot of missing functionality and hidden potential. %% you can set different types of properties like date or checkbox, you can edit them in the sidebar, and you can click on any in your vault to check out the same name %% %% And with the power of plugins, we can go from beginner to pro. %% So in this video, I'll show you some ways to enhance them with community plugins so you can go from a properties beginner to pro power user. #### Beginner But before we go into the enhancements, let's first explore the core functionality of the properties plugin so we know what we're working with. - you can set different types of properties - most are straight forward, but some are really useful - checkbox - before you would have to type true or false but now it's a simple click - Date - you can still easily navigate to the specified date - Not a link to the note so your backlinks will stay clean but - you can access them in the sidebar - Properties view: show file properties - Can see all properties you have across all notes - Properties view: show all properties - you can click on them to search in the search pane - if you want to type up a new property search, just start off with a square bracket Now that we know it's core functionality, let's start exploring how we can start enhancing it #### Intermediate ##### Templates I personally like to use my Obsidian vault as my daily journal which includes different things like a quick summary of what happened, a rating of the day from 1-10, or the link to the weekly note it is related to. If we continue with our example of podcast notes, it would be a pain to have to create the fields of the note every time we wanted to create a new podcast note. But instead of having to fill out these properties every time, Instead, I want all my daily notes to have these fields already there. Luckily, we can use templates to automate this. - Download templater plugin - Templates folder - Create new template "Podcast Episode Template" - URL - Podcast episode, link to the podcast note - Rating - Finis~~h~~ed - Settings - Daily note set template location - Go to templater settings - Auto apply template on creation - Create new template "Daily Note Template" - Create Summary - Rating - Create week - In source mode, it is simply just frontmatter So now when we create a new daily note in this folder, we can use this template. Now we can automatically add fields, but what about doing so for the values as well? ##### Auto-fill variables But what if we wanted to take it one step further and auto-fill certain variables we know would exist? Instead of having to type the week it's related to, what if the template could also automatically add it ? This is where we can use templater variables is a bit advanced but i just want to show you the potential look through documentation tp file title variable gives us the title of the note try it with moment, we can then take this date, and calculate the week it's from format See what other variables are available, link in description ##### Sync in-line Next, as part of my daily note workflow, I have a reflection section I fill out at the end of the day, which asks me for a summary on how it went. Yes I could just write this summary into the properties field by scrolling up or using the sidebar, but I want it to feel more natural and still be part of the section. So recently I made a plugin to do just that. So to download, you'll need to download two plugins: - Dataview plugin lets you create inline fields within your notes - Second plugin is my plugin called Inline Frontmatter Sync, which provides one-way sync from the text fiel - Maybe when this video is out it will already be available, but if not, you can download it a different way - read these instructions, will be in description https://tfthacker.com/Obsidian+Plugins+by+TfTHacker/BRAT+-+Beta+Reviewer's+Auto-update+Tool/Quick+guide+for+using+BRAT In my reflection section, I'll add an in-line field for summary. With the plugin disabled, nothing happens. But if we enable the plugin, when I start changing the value for this inline field, you can see that it updates the property as well. ##### Jump to parts of the note Now we have another problem. for this summary property, i can only have a single line - all the content under won't be easily reachable. what if on my weekly notes i had a dataview table that showed all the different days, and I wanted to see my complete summary? This is where we can use the power of obsidian links. Create a header to put summary section under Create an embed link to the header in the note - If you want to apply this for multiple notes - In template, would use the variable tp file title ### Intro **Hook** **Brief outline of topics covered:** - ### Content %% Remember why you're creating the video and have a general overview of what you're talking about %% ### Conclusion **What are some relevant references or links?** As a bonus, there's one last powerful plugin i have to share, but I needed a fully dedicated video to showcase it's features.
