Having to manually copy and move them into my calendar to plan my day felt tedious - I wanted it to be as easy as dragging them into specific times in my calendar - Additionally, I wanted to see all my tasks in one place, including ones from other apps like ClickUp or Notion. - But since Obsidian's tasks are stored locally as plain markdown text, there was no easy way to do so. - ! So, I felt like I had to make a sacrifice: either I keep my tasks with my notes, or keep them separate for easy planning. - fortunately, you can now have the best of both worlds! - Morgen recently released a new feature that integrates obsidian with it's powerful calendar app. - % wow effect on morgen logo, then show calendar app with hint of obsidian integration **Brief outline of topics covered:** - After trying it out, this synchronization across my notes, tasks, and calendar felt liberating. it opened up new workflow possibilities. - % show example where I go from notes, to morgen to adjust obsidian calendar tasks - %% knowledge system, i've realized a few benefits. t's also made me realize the power of integrating your knowledge system with your tasks %% - insights from our notes and highlights can now be quickly turned into planned action items - @ atomic habits - %% b-roll is header called insights, create bullet list then turn it into a task %% - we can create global hotkeys to add new tasks into any note, like a project we're working on - and beyond the integration itself, making the switch to text-based tasks has also been its own rabbit hole - planning out projects became easier as I can now freely move and modify tasks at the speed of thought, the same way as text - when it comes time to start working on them, i'm only one click away from important information and relevant notes - and with the right prompts, you can overcome planning paralysis by using ai to make detailed plans you can easily copy paste into obsidian - for ones you already have set up, you can create templates to automate task creation - [ ] still need to do - you can even go beyond the default checkbox functionality to create custom statuses - so, in this video i'll show you how you can set all of this up yourself using Obsidian and Morgen, and show examples for how i've been using these features ### Content - first, i'll show how to set up obsidian - Right now I have a simple project note to set up this Morgen and Obsidian integration which has some tasks - for the integration to work, we need to level up these basic checkboxes by downloading the tasks plugin in obsidian - the most feature-rich plugin for managing tasks in obsidian - download - % configure settings - global query - useful for not including tasks from a templates folder you may have - now if we continue typing on a task, we can add properties to our tasks - for this setup, we'll focus on three specifically - type `id`, can generate a unique id - a task needs to have an id to show in morgen - type `due` to add a due date - can select an option or manually type our own - can also set priority by typing in priority and choosing one that works best for you - let's add id's to all of these and set due dates to today, and one tomorrow - for morgen integration, set priority to high since we need to do it for this integration to work - now that we have some tasks ready to be synced, we can now set up morgen - morgen calendar - it is paid monthly, but you can try it for 7 days free and get 10% off by using my affiliate link in the description - after downloading the app, head to settings -> local integrations - follow instructions - now it should sync - for each task - will show the note it's from - due date is synced - priority if we added one as well - now we can drag the task onto our calendar - Resize it if needed - if we decide to move it to a different day, it will update the due date in obsidian as well - and when we want to check it off we can do so here - to visit the note, can click on open in obsidian - that's technically all you need to do for the integration, but as i mentioned earlier, there's a lot more potential if we combine other plugins - ! To make it easier to add tasks into Obsidian, let's create a global hotkey to add a task in any note - Create quickadd plugin template - Create choice - Configure settings - Format value as task - Insert after - ## Tasks - After section - Sometimes we might not have the tasks header in our notes, so we can also make it create one at the top of the file if it's missing - Can also choose to open the note after creating it, but I would rather not since I don't want to get distracted by having Obsidian open. If you do want to visit after, you can always revisit Obsidian - Capture format - {{value:Task Name}} šŸ†” 0930130309 {{value: ,šŸ”¼,šŸ”ŗ,ā«,šŸ”½,ā¬}} šŸ“… {{VDATE:Due Date, YYYY-MM-DD}} - Add ID - timestamp for unique id - Add priority - Add due date - Supports simple natural language dates. If I type today, it will show as today! - Priority, I set the default option to be the most common one, medium - Two other plugins - To use timestamp we added, need to download templater - To use natural language dates, we need natural language dates plugin - Visit Morgen, it seems to have correctly synced - Turn it into a command by pressing lightning icon - To turn it into a global hotkey, we can now download the global hotkey plugin - Find the hotkey and add in the hotkey you want - Ctrl+Shift+Alt+= - @ create a task - Choose our project 1 file - Type in name "Learn how to efficiently organize markdown tasks" - You can also use this to store tasks in other notes - Create example note "Another Project" - Run command - See how task header was created with the task - ! Now that we have an efficient capture system, let's go over how I like to use this - The main use case I've found the most benefit from is when managing my personal projects - when i'm brainstorming what i need to do, i can just write out all my tasks - since it's just text, we can create lists and sublists - @ task 1, subtask 1, task 2 - combine with subtext - subtext 1 - But to add enhanced behavior and capabilities to the default list experience, I also use the outliner plugin - Visit settings - Can better visualize hierarchy with this option to show lines - Ctrl+A lets you only select content of current line, pressing again then selects everything - To work at the speed of thought, I also prefer using hotkeys - To create new tasks can use `Toggle Checkbox Status`, which I set to Ctrl+5 - To create lists I use `Toggle bullet list` Ctrl+R - Also like to have hotkeys for moving lines up and down - `Move line up` Ctrl+1 - `Move line down` Ctrl+2 - For more advanced usage - `Move list and sublists up` Ctrl+Alt+1 - `Move list and sublists down` Ctrl+Alt+2 - Create sub sub list and see how it moves - But eventually it can be too much, so have one more settings - `Fold list` Ctrl+Up - `Unfold list` Ctrl+Down - so yeah. once i'm done outlining my plan, i can choose which ones i need to add to morgen - you can instantly plan things that have a set deadline - but otherwise, i usually plan tasks on a weekly basis - but most of the time i only like to plan projects a week ahead, since it's hard to accurately plan the time it takes to do things, let alone account for any unexpected events - and since i usually have 1-2 hour time blocks for these tasks, sometimes i don't even import them all - can create a parent task for a group of them that is added to morgen, while the super quick tasks i'll just see when i open the note - now we can confidently create complex project plans - but one thing i realized when planning it out is that i wanted custom types beyond unchecked and checked boxes - what if i wanted to indicate that a task was optional, or have cancelled tasks i don't want to do but still want to keep on there? - multi-state checkboxes - make a list of the ones you want to import - set up states - not started - in progress / - question ? - cancelled - - completed x - enable only those - set a hotkey to toggle between them, `Ctrl+Alt+5` - okay we're done with tasks, what does it look like in action? - I'm starting a podcast with my best friend Aidan, and part of my responsibility is to create shortform clips for it - I've never consistently done so, so I looked to Claude Projects to help me brainstorm a plan - I have a system prompt to help me break it down into actionable tasks, which was built off of a prompt someone used to achieve complex things from scratch like create a nuclear fusor in their college dorm - Gave a list of objectives I wanted to achieve, and it ended up creating detailed plans for doing each - I also asked it to give time estimates for how long some things would take, so I can keep it in mind when working on it - Copied the markdown and put it into my Obsidian, and cleaned up the tasks by removing and re-arranging some - Now, once I'm ready to start this project, I can plan my efforts for a week. i'll probably want to spend max 2 hours a day working on it, so when I find a task with around that much time estimated, I'll bring it into morgen by adding an id and due date. - At the start of the day, I'll block it out on my calendar alongside my other tasks scheduled - When my time to work on it starts, I'll open the task in Obsidian and have a clear set of tasks to follow ### Conclusion by following the tutorial, i hope you can continue to experiment with the features to best implement your ideal productivity workflow :) What are some relevant references or links? - if you want other apps to improve your obsidian experience, you can check out how i manage my reading library using readwise reader - if you want to dive deeper into how i manage my tasks and projects, you can visit my notes sharing how i do so at notes.johnmavrick.com This has been John Mavrick, stay mindful ## Reflection **Satisfied?** - Yeah, I think the price for the video editing was a bit higher than expected, not sure what the 5 hours was hmm. I think just animations and intro searching? **Improvements and solutions learned for the future:** - I kind of do need to teach Dan so I can continue focusing on other parts of my brand, so far he seems to be doing a good job!
