**Hook** - Call out the viewer - If all you're doing to implement the PARA method is create folders to put your notes in, then you're severely limiting the capabilities of your second brain - The truth is, folders are just the first level at which you can use the para method - Folders were made over a hundred years ago to organize physical files in cabinets, but now were living in the digital age - %%We are bombarded with more information than ever before through our social media feeds and working lives, so why aren't we evolving our organization methods alongside the media we consume? %% - **might not need to add because if you know what PARA is, you know about folders** - %% Our note taking apps have evolved to include new tools like %% ~~We now have modern technology like AI to help us process and find information beyond human capability, so why don't we use these tools to upgrade our second brain?~~ %% you can automate a lot of the tedious organizing and you can systematize your workflows so you %% **Brief outline of topics covered:** - So, in this video, I'll help you level up your PARA system and take you from level 1 folder beginner to level 3 information expert using my favorite feature-rich note-taking app, Obsidian - In level 2 we can overcome the main problem of folders by organizing your notes the same way as your brain naturally does - And In level 3 we can personalize our notes by adding different properties, which we can use to automatically organize and find our notes when needed - %% resurface any relevant information using the power of AI %% - ~~And lastly, in level 4 we can transcend past the PARA method and resurface any relevant information using the power of AI~~ - If you stay until the end, you'll get a chance to download and try out the second brain i'm making in this video, and you'll also gert free lessons on how to incorporate the other parts of the CODE method - enroll in my free email course on a complete actionable guide on how to implement Tiago Forte's - Anyways, it's time to finally unlock the power of a second brain. But to do so, we need to start at the basics ### Content %% Remember why you're creating the video and have a general overview of what you're talking about %% #### Level 1 - Folders - Let's start from level 1 which is folders and work our way up in expertise - In Obsidian we can go to the folder view which is in the left sidebar, and here we can create folders for each part of the PARA method - From here on, Tiago recommends you to create folders based on each project, area, or resource in your life, but before you do so, I want to outline a problem with using folders - Lets say I had a project I was working on, which was a video how to use the PARA method in Obsidian - No clue where I got that idea from - Create the project - and as part of this project, I had a note on `how to use folders in Obsidian` - Let's also say I had a resource folder for Obsidian, because I also have other notes from learning how to use the app - I don't know about you, but I believe this note should be in both places - But unfortunately, folders are not made to do that #### Level 2 - Links - That's why I want to introduce links, which is level 2 of the PARA method - With links, you can reference a note in multiple places at once - But to achieve this, we have to go against tiago forte's advice - instead of making sub folders for each project or area of our life, we need to make notes - Delete project and obsidian - Think of notes as a more customizable version of folders - For example, instead of creating a folder to keep all notes related to this video project, i can create a note instead - Create `how to use the PARA method in Obsidian` note - With a folder we could only organize the notes inside via alphabetical order - But now, we can choose how we organize our notes through the use of headers, bullet lists, etc - We also now have a space to think and record other information - Can add context to why we include certain notes - Right after the link or as sub-bullet points - Have header for YouTube Titles, thumbnails, and outline - Create - Instead of folders, our video project and Obsidian resources now have a life of it's own - This also lets us create relationships with the other types of notes in our vault - I can say that this project is Linked to an area - My YouTube Channel - In this area note, Stores information related to my branding, my videos, and personal workflows - Linked to resources note - YouTube - Stores all information related on tips for writing a script and video editing - Congratulations! you've taken the first step to stop thinking in folders, to turn your notes into a representation of your life - Next, it's time to add some personality to each part of the PARA method and to further connect all this information together #### Templates and Queries - We can agree that projects, areas, resources are all different, so why do we create each one based off of a blank note? - We need to be able to classify each note type and personalize each note based on it's type - Set up a unique tag for each note type - Add properties to a note - We're now at level 3, using templates and queries to automate this - Download templater plugin - Templates folder - Create new template "Project Template" - Status is to show the status - Red for not started, yellow for in progress, green for finished - Tags, tags, `#project/youtube` - Links, put a link to my projects - Deadline, date, next week - Area it's related to, text, My Youtube Channel - Customize headers - Since my projects are youtube videos, I can add titles, thumbnails, and script - Settings - Daily note set template location - Go to templater settings - Auto apply template on creation - Set Projects folder to use it - Test create new project "How to use PARA method in Obsidian" - Can do the same for area too - Create new template "Area Template" - Links - Create new template "Resource Template" - Links - Area, link to related area - With this new classification, we can take our links to another level - Right now all the links are viewable through backlinks, but I want to further organize them based on note type and see the results in the note itself. The note doubles as a dashboard of all related notes - Make new resources for project: - PARA method - Obsidian - Link both to para method in obsidian - Set up different queries to differentiate the related notes - New header - Download dataview - Create query - So if i go into my project note, I can see specifically what resources are related - If I go into my area note, I can see what projects I have for it, and what resources are related - PARA method in Obsidian #### AI %% - Set up Smart Connections plugin - Use OpenAI - platform.openai.com - API key - Costs money to create embeddings for your notes, but searching does not cost anything - It cost me around 17 cents to upload 4600 notes which had 160,000 words. - Usage via smart connections files - Once it's set up, we can open up the smart connections files window - When you're on a note, it will look at the note content and try to find the most similar notes - PARA Method in Obsidian - Recommends PARA Method, then Obsidian - Alternatively, you can do a general search to find related notes - have a note with different title but has content related to PARA method and Obsidian, will still find - Put it in a header and create other headers - YouTube - Not as relevant - So if you need ideas on what to include in your script, just search - But before we start using AI, we need to format our notes in a way that best supports it - In the settings, we can customize on whether to show relevant results by note or by heading - Prefer headers because if there's a super important section in a note that's relevant to the note you're currently writing - This makes it important to organize your notes by headers, or breaking it down further into smaller notes and ideas %% ### Conclusion **What are some relevant references or links?** - Unfortunately, the PARA method is just a fraction of what you need to know. To fully set up a system to capture, organize, distill, an express your knowledge inside Obsidian, go to the description and sign up for my free email course to learn how to do so - You'll get the vault I made in this video for free, and you'll learn how to upgrade it to finally start building your own Second Brain - Alternatively, if this is your first time hearing about Obsidian and you want to know how to start learning how to use it, you can watch this video here %% - Also I did say there's only 3 levels, but there's a secret 4th level of transcending beyond the PARA method, to become a true second brain using AI - You can learn how to set that up here %% - Anyways, if you enjoyed this video, be sure to like and subscribe for more content like this - This has been John Mavrick, stay mindful ## Rough Draft
