On my deathbed, I want to live a fulfilling life where I worked towards my full potential and long-term goals. But as I was doing my 2023 reflection, I realized there were two obstacles preventing me from fully doing so: - I didn't always feel driven to work on my daily tasks - I had trouble sticking to and remembering long-term goals and values First, sometimes I just didn't feel intrinsically motivated to work on my tasks and follow through on my timeblocks. This caused me to procrastinate and seek refuge in hedonistic activities like mindlessly doomscrolling, aimlessly playing games, and binging anime, which does not compound well for long-term happiness. I know you can persevere through discipline and by embracing discomfort, but let's assume that the eastern philosophy of the present being all that we have applies to our day-to-day life. If you don't like how today went, then tomorrow comes and you don't like how it went… if this pattern keeps up you will end up not enjoying your life. Is it really worth 99 days of unhappiness to achieve one day (or even a few seconds) of bliss? Thankfully, after reading Ali's new book Feel-Good Productivity, I was reminded that it is possible to have immserive fun for hours at a time, just like my old 16-hour gaming days. It's possible to work towards your goals not in a state of frictionful survival, but one of play and growth towards the ideal life I want to strive towards. Next, my second obstacle was not being able to act in accordance with my long-term goals. When I revisited my goals for 2023, I didn't even recall a single one. They were as if I was reading some random person's goals, being completely different from my current priorities. I get that a lot of changes can happen in a year which may change your priorities and available opportunities, but how can I work towards a long-term vision in my day-to-day life if that long-term vision is no longer relevant to me, or if I forget it as a whole? When I'm planning my quarterly or monthly goals, how will I know when I'm off track chasing distractions or staying on track with my values? How can I make make sure that even in the last week of my year, my yearly goals are still meaningful to me and I'm still making progress on them? And so, these two obstacles stemmed from my disconnect between my long-term goals and my short-term actions. Thankfully, I plan on solving this through my multi-scale planning system. A multi-scale planning system aligns your long-term visions into smaller timeframes like quarterly, monthly, and weekly, all the way until your tangible daily life. It provides different layers of clarity as a foundation for pursuing our goals. And I believe this will solve my problems as it promotes Cal Newport's idea of [[Attention-centred productivity]]. Instead of the traditional view on productivity where you try to do as much as you can and base your self-worth on your accomplishments, attention-centered productivity is about being intentional with where you focus your time and energy. It's not about doing more, but doing less of the things that aren't important to you, making you feel less busy and feel more personally fulfilled. And in an online capitalist environment where we prioritize learning how to make $10,000 a month by working 16-hour days before even thinking about what we want to use that $10,000 a month for, I think it's important to start with intention. Anyways, I think that's enough of me rambling, how about we dive into the system? **Brief outline of topics covered:** ### Content ### Conclusion What are some relevant references or links?
