Self 1 is the self now, while self 2 is a future potential self.
these two factors make it hard to prove we are purely self created:
- continuation theory, s1 needs to be responsible for s2
- requries novelty
- a fundamental difference between s1 and s2, not just improvement
john argues they are non logically connected
[[Aspiration]] is process of how s1 participates in emergence based on s2 such that s1 has disappeared into s2
s1 actions are only justified when s2 is actualized
- normatively dependent, s1 is secondary to s2's existence
- s1 causal power, s2 normative authority
how do we relate to an s2 that isnt there but is guiding us?
- an imaginal symbol like [[Divine double]], a way of labelling this systematic process for ourselves
- a symbolic self you can internalize anagogically and partake in aspiration
- ex) [[Improve salience landscape by internalizing role models]] - something that is not you becomes part of you
- constant [[Self-Actualization]] and iteration. receive and make through [[Participatory knowing]]
everything is a thing beyond itself as you participate in this process because everything can grow beyond it's current potential
