## Why
Manage knowledge for learning, creating, and taking action.
*Still currently trying to combine the notes in [[Learn PKM and note-taking methodology (Preview)]]*
%%
First, we need to understand the point of personal knowledge management in the first place—why we need a [[Digital Galaxy]], our personal sanctuary in the digital universe.
%%
There are three main reasons why I use PKM:
- **Understanding** the world by effective [[Learning]] and processing
- **Creativity** for self-expression and the discovery of new ideas
- **Productivity** through action and information efficiency for personal growth
The processes are similar, but I feel the subtlety in the intentions requires different approaches for knowledge management.
### Understanding
The focus is on conceptual [[Understanding]].
This is for those who want to cultivate [[Wisdom]] to discover the reality of the world.
This is different from **productivity** since it focuses on conceptual understanding, not action.
This is different from [[Creativity]], since that is more open to personal subjective interpretation and the emergence of new ideas.
#### Who
- Self-learners learning from books and different sources
- Students trying to understand the concepts in their classes
- [[Generalist|Generalists]] or [[Polymath]] interested in different domains
### Creativity
Focusing on generating new insights through our personal interpretations and synthesis of our [[Inputs]].
[[Art is to creatively self-actualize]]
#### Who
- Introspective people who want to nurture their feelings, journals, and inner thoughts for reflection
- Creatives (artists, writers, researchers) synthesizing ideas to generate unique insights
- [[Polymath]] who want their insights from different disciplines to combine and help their main pursuit in [[T-shaped knowledge]] fashion
- Those interested in the [[Linking Your Thinking]] organization and principles
### Productivity
The focus is on actionability.
Efficiency in managing and [[Retrieving information from your notes]] so you can complete concrete objectives and maintain ongoing responsibilities.
#### Who
- People who do [[Knowledge work]] (ex., programmers who need to learn on the job for their deliverables constantly)
- People who use PKM for managing [[Goals]] and [[Projects]] across the different [[Areas]] in their life
- Those interested in the [[Building a Second Brain]] organization and principles
- Content creators who only need to regurgitate what they learn for the sake of lead generation and marketing 😅
## How
The three domains have been broken down into categories to help you *SOAR* through the knowledge process in your digital galaxy (haha get it you can laugh and applaud):
- Source
- Where is knowledge coming from? In what forms?
- Organize
- How do we integrate the information from sources into our vault?
- What systems are used to manage this information?
- Which notes in [[USV Glossary]] are used?
- Approach
- What do we do with the information and how?
- What [[USV Workflows]] can we follow?
- Result
- What is the finished product?
After further research, this seems to have naturally modelled the key principles of [[Systems]]
### Understanding
> [!EXAMPLE]
> Can visit [[PKM and learning example]]
#### Source
[[Inputs]] from sources you are learning the ideas from in your [[Information Diet]]:
- Books
- Lectures
- Videos
- Conversations
- etc.
[[Fleeting Notes]] for any spontaneous realizations as a result of [[Bottom-Up Thinking|Diffused Thinking]]
#### Organize
[[Conceptual notes]] are the foundation of this system, as they help us create [[Concept models]] of the topics.
[[Maps of Content (MOC)]] are for [[Higher-order thinking]] to help us organize these ideas beyond the sources we learned them from. To triangulate different perspectives: [[Diversity in knowledge helps with triangulating wise insights]]
#### Approach
Sources follow the [[Progression of idea originality]] using the [[RRR Note-Making Method]].
[[Making connections between notes]]
Then, we can construct our own [[Concept models]] of the concepts based on our own understanding, so now it is fully independent from the organization of the source.
When concept modeling, prioritize making connections since we [[Learn something new by connecting it to something that you already know]].
This is where we can continue progressing in the [[Types of Knowing]] to deepen our understanding through methods like [[Bloom's taxonomy]]
#### Result
We practice our general capacity for [[Rationality]] by playing around with the ideas.
Cultivating [[Wisdom]] in this certain domain.
### Creativity
[[ARC Framework]] makes the most sense to me as it gives us a framework to focus on things beyond just consuming and adding more content into our ideaverse.
#### Source
[[Fleeting Notes]] for any flashes of insight or ideas throughout the day.
[[Periodic reviews]] during the reflection period (where the more elaborate insights are refactored into conceptual notes).
[[Thoughts]] based on life experiences.
[[Inputs]] containing highlights and our annotations, through the [[Meta-meaning]] we attach to something
#### Organize
Focus is on the growth of our **own** ideas.
To be creative, we organize our originality and understanding over highlights and other people's words.
Ideation cannot be rushed and has no clear end goal, so we opt for a less rigid approach to growing our notes through the [[Evergreen Notes]] philosophy by keeping track of them in [[My Greenhouse]].
#### Approach
Sources follow the [[Progression of idea originality]] using the [[RRR Note-Making Method]].
To grow these ideas, we keep track of their progress using the different [[Evergreen Notes#Status]], and develop them through [[Note-making]].
For each one we can start linking upwards to parent notes like [[Maps of Content (MOC)]], which will later allow for [[Higher-order thinking]] and [[Idea Emergence]].
#### Result
Creative [[Outputs]] through [[Brainstorms]] process or personalized ones like [[My Writings]]
Not everyone is a content creator, so I did not pre-make any templates. You can create your own in [[USV Module - Set up the vault#Productivity]]
### Productivity
#### Source
[[Meeting Notes]] to turn the conversation into insights and action.
[[Fleeting Notes]] for any personal ideas that come to mind.
[[Inputs]] for giving you the steps and mindsets helpful for achieving your ideal outcomes more efficiently.
#### Organize
The actionability-focused principle of [[PARA Method]], but on steroids due to more note types.
Organize information based on the different [[Note types]] in the [[Information actionability hierarchy]]. This helps with easily retrieving the notes when you need it in the future.
#### Approach
- For each source you have, develop the ideas for actionability in relation to the outcome you are trying to achieve, then organize them for retrievability when you need them:
- Create new "action notes" that emerge from the information
- ex) [[Meeting Notes#Action Items]]
- Engage in [[Progressive Summarization]] to bold and highlight key parts in the source you will need to revisit in the future
- [[Put notes where they are most useful]]
#### Result
We now have the knowledge required to support us in [[USV and Productivity]] readily available just by visiting our notes.
When starting new projects or goals we can follow procedures outlined like:
- [[My goal setting workflow]]
- [[My project workflow]]
