## Principles To extract relevant information from the world ([[Knowledge Assets]]) that is important to us. See [[My Inputs Workflow]] for how I capture information into my second brain. ## Tools - [[Readwise Reader]] - [[Readwise Reader]] - Pretty good, only downside is it doesn't get metadata well, Zotero could be a better approach to reference management - https://www.reddit.com/r/readwise/comments/10vrnql/suggestions_on_optimizing_reader_for_academic/ ### Highlighting practices #### Aim for 10-20% retention from each previous layer When you're consuming information, whether it's from a book, article, lecture, or any other source, the goal is to retain only a small portion of it, around 10-20%. Instead of trying to remember everything, focus on identifying the most important and valuable parts to retain. This lets you prioritize the key concepts, main ideas, and critical details, making it easier to recall and apply the information later on. This approach prevents information overload and allows you to focus on the most relevant aspects. #### Have criteria for highlighting something When you're about to highlight something, ask yourself: 1. **Does it inspire me?** - Does it resonate with my passions or interests? - Does it evoke a strong emotional response or curiosity within me? - Does it align with my long-term goals or aspirations? - Does it challenge my current beliefs or perspectives? 2. **Is it useful?** - How can I apply this information in my life or work? - Does it provide practical solutions to a problem I'm facing? - Can it enhance my skills, knowledge, or decision-making abilities? - Does it offer valuable insights or strategies that are relevant to my current projects or goals? 3. **Is it personal?** - Does it connect with my personal values or principles? - Does it align with my unique thought process or identity? - Does it relate to my personal experiences or challenges? - Does it contribute to my personal growth or self-reflection? 4. **Does it surprise me?** - Does it present new perspectives or unconventional ideas? - Does it challenge my preconceived notions or beliefs? - Does it provide unexpected insights or information? - Does it broaden my understanding or awareness of a subject? ### Practices - Take [[Fleeting Notes]] whenever you have something memorable to note down during life's daily events
